9/11 PROJECTS

When I woke up the morning of Tuesday, September 11, 2001, on my vacation in the Outer Banks of North Carolina, I could have never imagined the horrible things that were about to occur that day. - It was a time before smart phones and 24/7 access to the world and each other. And I felt so isolated, being so far away from the people and places I knew so well. - I sat on the beach with friends, and other vacationers, as fighter jets flew up and down the Atlantic coastline in readiness for another attack. Everyone on that beach, dealt with their grief and fear in their own personal way that morning. But for our group, it felt different. We were all from the New York/New Jersey area and knew friends and colleagues that worked in those buildings. We had been in those buildings. To us, it seemed a little more personal.

Since that tragic day, I have had the privilege of working on a few projects to help commemorate the victims and support the first responders.

FLAGSHIP 40X100 EXHIBIT:
INAUGURAL HOMELAND SECURITY & NATIONAL DEFENSE SYMPOSIUM

The inaugural Homeland Security & National Defense Symposium took place on the one year anniversary of the 9/11 Attacks. The purpose of the symposium was to promote the new equipment and technologies being developed for the U.S military soldier and first responders. - The symposium wanted to have a flagship exhibit to welcome the government and industry officials attending and asked our firm to design and produce this exhibit. - The main challenge was the timeline. We only had three weeks from concept to completion, to design, fabricate and deliver the exhibit to the show. The design was presented and approved in a few days. Then, fabrication drawings were produced and sent to our extrusion partner’s main production plant in Germany. - The German plant had the equipment and capabilities needed to produce the parts in the timeline required, versus their U.S. facility, which couldn’t produce some of the more complex curved pieces. - As we waited on the extrusion production, all the graphics were designed and put into production, along with the production of the countertops in our fabrication shop. - All the extrusion parts arrived by air freight three days before setup. Which only allowed us to do a parts count and minimal mock-ups before the show. Most of the exhibit, including the main entrance arch and towers, were assembled for the first time, on the show flood. - This success was only possible because of the preparation, communication, trust and competence of our design and production team.

MONMOUTH UNIVERSITY
9/11 MEMORIAL PODIUM

After all the wreckage of the World Trade Center was examined by experts, pieces of it were offered to schools and other institutions to display on their campuses. Monmouth University received a section of twisted I-beam from the wreckage. - Because of our firm’s trusted relationship with the university, they asked us the look at the piece and come up with a proper way to display it. - Out of respect for the piece we didn’t want to modify it. We also didn’t want to place it in a display case, with a placard describing it… We wanted it to have purpose again. - The University’s first though was to design a podium and have the piece displayed next to it. But after inspecting the shape and size of the piece, we thought it would be an inspiring idea to make the piece a part of the podium. Make it the support structure. Make it function as an I-beam again.
